Who am I? A highly unqualified musician!

By Paul | January 2, 2008

I am a (largely self-taught) pianist, guitarist, composer, songwriter, improviser, accompanist and occasional performer who hopes soon to also become an accomplished drummer, regular local performer and highly-recommended piano/improvisation/composition teacher. If you would like to:

Perhaps you have struggled with formal instrument tuition in the past. Maybe traditional teaching does not suit your nature?

Perhaps you feel that your “slowness” in reading from music limits your achievement? Maybe you are someone who needs to learn a piece of music “by heart” before you can play it at your best?

Perhaps you enjoy trying to play by ear (however limited you may feel your abilities are in this respect), tapping out melodies or chords from your favourite songs or from your own CD collection?

Perhaps you particularly most enjoy playing creatively in a state of heightened inspiration? Perhaps after watching “Later with Jools Holland” or other live performance shows or local talents?

Perhaps your playing has plateau-ed or your feel “stuck in a rut” and seek inspiration or motivation?

Perhaps you have lapsed from playing, feel that you have become “rusty” and find it difficult to resume an appropriate level of practise?

If you fit any of these scenarios, then there should be plenty on this website now (or very soon) to help you, inspire you and help you break out of your musical comfort zones.

If you fit any of these scenarios but can’t find something of benefit on this site, do me a huge favour and tell me about it. If I like your thoughts and suggestions, I will do my very best to make sure you feel your time and trouble in contacting me was worthwhile.

If you fit any of these scenarios and happen to live in or near Bedford UK, you might be interested in piano tuition delivered in a unique and individually-tailored manner. For a limited time (until 08/08/08) and depending on demand, I am able to offer one free lesson (with the possibility of more if schedules permit) to anyone living in Bedford (UK). Please get in touch.

At this time I am focussed on building a reputation for creative and enjoyable piano-tuition within the Bedford area. I must mention that whilst I am a qualified and experienced (school) teacher, my specialism has been mathematics.

As far as the piano is concerned, on paper I am a grade 1 pianist. It took me a few years to get to that level (with formal tuition) when I was a youngster. I have had no further lessons, but intead have taught myself to play piano as well as guitar and, to a limited extent, folk harp. I intend to sit some graded examinations to prove myself and expect to have passed at least grade 6 within a year. I strongly feel that my lack of paper qualifications in piano-playing is part of my unique approach, but I understand that any prospective tutee might doubt my competence. It is for this reason, I am offering free lessons for a limited period. I am confident that anyone with a desire to be a creative pianist will thrive under my tuition.

I would intend to demonstrate an individually-tailored approach that would enhance the enjoyment of any tutee. Clearly, if you are interested in playing classical (or any other style of music for that matter) note-for-note from sheet music, my approach is probably not for you and I would advise you to look elsewhere. If you wish to be able to play freely and comfortably without the “musical crutch” of sheet music or to improvise, compose or songwrite, my approach may well be precisely what you are looking for - why not give my free lesson offer a try? Contact me.
